  • NTSC 20gb and 60gb units contained PS2 chips and should be able to run just about all PS2 games.
  • PAL 60gb and the NTSC 80gb units that could handle BC ran emulation and run, I think, about 70% of PS2 games (and even then there are issues).
  • Don't forget that they won't run games outside of their region.

  • The ones with four USB ports.
  • All the models with 2 USB ports are not PS2 BC.

  • Not all PS3 fats have PS2 BC, and it also depends where you live as to what PS3s your region got (after all, America is not the world).
  • For 80gb and under...
    • NTSC 20gb - full BC
    • NTSC 40gb - no BC
    • PAL 40gb - no BC
    • NTSC 60gb - full BC
    • PAL 60gb - partial BC
    • NTSC 80gb v1 - partial BC
    • NTSC 80gb v2 - no BC
    • PAL 80gb - no BC

If you live in PAL territories, you only have one option (the PAL 60gb) which only supports partial BC. If you live in NTSC territories then you have more options.

You can upgrade the HDD pretty easily, and cheaply. I just bought a 720 GB HDD for my slim for about $80. If the $199 one is the refurb, that might be the route to go.

Playing on a Backwards Compatible PS3 Edit

Only the original 20 and 60 GB PS3s have PS2 backwards compatibility in hardware. The 80GB model emulated the PS2 in software for about 80% compatibility.
